I Think Self-Hosted Services are the Future

Given the current fragile global political climate and the slow (but noticeable) erosion of privacy, many have been looking for an alternative to centralised cloud-based services. Privacy conscious people don't trust corporations beholden to shareholders to keep their data safe, and don't trust governments to protect their right to a private life (especially private communication). Therefore, I think self-hosting the services we need will be the future, and they will form the backbone of the next generation of the Internet.

Over the past few years, the parts necessary to make this future a reality (WebFinger for authentication and ActivityPub for federated social media, for example) have become more mature, resurged in popularity or gained mass adoption.

This talk will discuss how self-hosting services forms the foundation for almost absolute personal digital freedom and the challenges we need to tackle for this self-sufficient future to become a reality.
