receiving radiosignals from satellites .. the gateway to spark your interest in Space
2026-05-30 , Workshop room

For most people, a satellite is "a thing that flies up there" and concider space as something you can only do if you work for a big organisation or a university.

This talk will discuss two projects everybody can participate in, that involve receiving radiosignals from satellites: satdump and TinyGS.

Sattdump is an open-source application that allows you to receive, decode and visualise signals from a large number of different satellites. One of its application it to receive images from polar orbiting weather satelites, like the METEOR and MetOP.
The presenation will also look at the science side of this and explain how to interprete these images and provide some background how to access open-access data from these and other earth-observation satellites.

A 2nd application is TinyGS, a community project for a build-it-yourself groundstation to receive telemetry data from cubesat satellites via LoRa, thereby helping universities to gather data from their satellites.

And, if weather permits, we will also do a real live demonstration to receive images from a weather satellite later that evening.
