Mapping surveillance cameras
2026-05-30 , Talks room

From the classic elongated camera at the entrance to the store, to the ANPR camera along the highway; from the bulb camera in the station to the doorbell camera near your neighbors: in all their shapes and sizes, surveillance cameras are ubiquitous in our area. And there are more and more. But how much, and where do they hang? To answer that question, we will help you in this workshop on your way to map out the cameras in your neighborhood.

We start with some background about OpenStreetMap (the freely accessible database and map with which we map the cameras), the Belgian legislation around surveillance cameras and the social impact of this surveillance. Then we go out into the street, to map the cameras we come across. Of course, there is also room for discussion around surveillance cameras and their impact on our lives and society.

After studying informatics at Ghent University, Pieter was drawn into OpenStreetMap and is now working for a small company providing mobilityplanning and routeplanning services. As freelancer, he developed MapComplete, which aims to be an easy-to-use and topical map viewer and editor. You might find him climbing or cycling somewhere, even though he'll often pause to add something to OSM.
